Even though I moved into my first retail store a few months later, the name of the store was "Official Lincoln Lease". A lot has changed in three years. Fast forward to 2021, I found a business partner and we re-opened a new retail store, a little bigger than the first one. We decided to rent or sell most of the dresses I still own. Over time, it became clear that the sell side of the business greatly outnumbered the lease side. So now, a little over a year after we opened, we've made a decision. We are phasing out the rental aspect of the business and are only offering gowns for sale. There are many reasons for this decision. I will outline them here. The vendors from whom we buy gowns are not allowed to rent out their gowns. This means that any new clothes we buy are only for sale. The only dresses we rent out are the ones I bought three years ago when I first started. Some of them are exhausted. Eventually, all these rental clothes either wear out or go out of style, and we have no more clothes to rent. We are interested in buying from some suppliers. However, they wouldn't work with us because we rented the dress. As mentioned above, we sell far more dresses than we rent. I would estimate that 90% of our business is selling dresses rather than renting them out. The bookkeeping of renting a dress is complicated. Running a retail store that sells merchandise requires tracking inventory. Tracking inventory is not only for our own purposes, but also for tax purposes. My accountant mentioned that having dresses that are both sold and rented complicates the tax process and makes it harder to keep track of inventory. Selling only the gowns will make this process easier for us and the accountants. Dresses often require alterations. The refitting part can get tricky when we rent skirts. We allow minor, removable alterations to rented skirts. However, this is a challenge. Most customers don't want to do the alterations themselves, and if they take the garment to a seamstress, the seamstress is not in the habit of doing removable alterations. Many dresses need more than simple alterations, and skirts need to be sold rather than rented anyway. We know some of our customers will be disappointed by this news.
